Millimeter Wave (mmWave) technology is spreading rapidly across the world and is quickly becoming one of the key technologies that makes 5G possible. In fact, operators in the United States and parts of Europe and Asia have already deployed 5G mmWave technology, while operators in Latin America, Australia, and elsewhere plan to follow suit in 2022.
To stay ahead of the curve, it is crucial for anyone in the wireless technology field to stay up to date on the latest mmWave technology. Moreover, as 5G private networks and industrial IoT become increasingly popular, managers in any industry should be familiar with the technology and how it can be used to optimize business strategy.
In this article, we discuss what mmWave is and how you can receive training in mmWave technology with the Qualcomm Wireless Academy (QWA).
The image above shows the difference between a millimeter wavelength (in blue) and other wavelengths (in gray).
mmWave is short for “millimeter wave” and refers to a frequency band used to support 5G communication that is around or above 24 GHz. At such frequencies, the wavelength of the 5G electromagnetic signal is only a few millimeters – hence the name “millimeter wave.” mmWave is a prominent band currently deployed in North American 5G networks operating at frequencies around 28 GHz and 39 GHz. It is also commercially deployed in several other countries, such as Japan, Finland, Italy, and more.
Until the advent of 5G, mmWave frequencies were seldom utilized. In fact, only a handful of technologies, such as satellite communication, had the ability to operate at mmWave frequencies. But by skillfully leveraging advances in hardware, RF, and modem technologies, mmWave has become the first cellular technology that can operate in such high frequency bands.
